Donald Cameron, 1st of Glendessary, was the second son of Allan Cameron of Lochiel, and was appointed Tutor to his nephew Ewen Cameron, son of his brother John Cameron, fiar of Lochiel, on 14 May 1637.[1] He m. Marjory, sister of Robert Campbell of Glenlyon,[2] and d. in 1687 having had issue,

2a} Donald Cameron, who was one of the executors to his uncle, John Cameron of Glendessary, at his death in 1695 and is then styled son of Donald Cameron, son of the Tutor of Lochiel. He was father of,

2b} Marjorie Cameron, m. by August 1690, to Donald MacLean, younger of Kingairloch.[3]

  1. Hugh Cameron, m. Mary MacDonald and d. in September of 1689.[4] He was father of,

3a} Una Cameron,

3a} Marsalie Cameron,

3a} Janet Cameron, all of whom are named in the inventory of their father’s estate following his death in 1689.

  1. Ewen Cameron, settled at Ardslignish, in Ardnamurchan, and m. Mary MacIain or MacKain. He d. in September 1690[5] and was father of,

4a} Allan Cameron, who is named with his siblings in an inventory of their father’s estate following his death in 1690.

John Cameron, 2nd of Glendessary, succeeded his father in 1687 and m. firstly, to Janet, daughter of MacLean of Kingairloch, by whom he had issue. He m. secondly, to Marjory, sister of Alexander Campbell of Lochnell, (c/m 26 January 1680. She survived him and m. secondly, by 20 January 1700, to Alexander Campbell of Sonnachan), to whom he assigned a liferent provision from his lands of Renachanmore on 25 November 1695.[6] He d. in April of 1695[7] and was father of :

  1. Allan Cameron, 3rd of Glendessary, (see below).
  2. Archibald Cameron of Dungallon, (see Cameron of Dungallon).
  3. Alexander Cameron, is styled son of John Cameron of Glendessary in a Sasine dated in 1708.[8]
  4. Marjory Cameron, m. John MacDonald of Sandaig.[9]

Allan Cameron, 3rd of Glendessary, succeeded his father in the lands of Glendessary and was served heir general to him on 24 July 1697.[10] He m. Christian, daughter of Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, (c/m 28 December 1699[11]), and d. on 7 December 1721,[12] having had issue;

  1. John Cameron, 4th of Glendessary, to whom his father granted a Disposition for the lands of Achibeg, and others, on 22 February 1721, in consideration of the terms of his parent’s marriage contract which were to infeft the eldest heir male therein and reserve the liferent for their own use.[13] Succeeding his father, he was served heir to him on 29 September 1729,[14] and disponed his lands of Aucharn and others in the parish of Morvern, to his brother Allan by disposition dated 27 December 1753. He had d. without male issue by May 1763.

  3. Jean Cameron, who loaned extensive sums of money to her brother Allan Cameron of Glendessary, including £680 by Bond of 24 March 1756, and secured over the lands of Clonlee; £484 by Bond dated 14 November 1757 and secured over the lands of Arness, and £400 by Bond dated 29 June 1769, secured over Aucharn all which were assigned by them to Trustees on 24 April 1772 and disponed to John Campbell of Ardsliginish and Allan Maclean of Drimin 19 April 1781.[15] She d. unmarried, at Mount Cameron, Lanarkshire, on 27 June 1772.

Allan Cameron, 5th of Glendessary, to whom his brother John conveyed the lands of Aucharn and others on 27 December 1753,[17] for which he had a charter of confirmation from the superior, the Duke of Argyll, on 19 November 1757. He also succeeded that brother in the lands of Glendessary and was served heir to John Cameron of Glendessary, his grandfather, on 18 May 1763.[18] He acquired the half-part of the lands of Kinlochaline by Disposition dated 17 December 1770,[19] which were afterwards placed into the hands of trustees and then sold by public roup. He m. Sibilla, daughter of Hector MacLean of Coll, (c/m 19 March 1754[20]), and was father of,

  1. Donald Cameron of Mount Cameron, (see below).
  2. Katherine Cameron, to whom her aunt, Jean, left £500 and her gold watch. She m. at Edinburgh, on 27 March 1780, to Captain Alexander Maclean, of the West Fencibles.[21]
  3. Jean Cameron, m. Captain Allan Maclean, 36th Regiment of Foot, and surviving her husband, she d. at Portobello, on 11 September 1858, aged 105 years.[22]
  4. Christian Cameron, to whom her aunt, Jean, left £100. She m. Captain Roderick Maclean, Coll, and d. at Kirkcaldy, on 14 July 1833.[23]
  5. Mary Cameron, to whom her father granted a Bond for £350 on 2 October 1773 secured over the lands of Aucharn, which she afterwards renounced to her father’s creditors on 7 September 1790.[24]

He was also father of a natural daughter;

  1. Isabel Cameron, to whom her half-brother, Donald Cameron of Mount Cameron, granted an annuity of £10 sterling by his Will of 1797.

Donald Cameron of Mount Cameron, to whom his aunt, Jean Cameron, left her lands of Mount Cameron, in Lanarkshire. He went out to India and served as a Captain of Grenadiers in the 1st Bombay Regiment of Dragoons of the H.E.I.C.S. He made out his Will while there on 13 March 1789 and by the terms of which after providing for his sisters, he sought to convey the lands of Mount Cameron to Allan Cameron of Ranachan in Sunart whom he considered “at this present moment my lawful heir after my sisters”. He had m. by 3 July 1795, to Helen Cameron when he amended his Will to provide for her,[25] and dsp after then and before 17 March 1806 when his Testament was confirmed in the Commissariot Books of Edinburgh.[26]
