Sir Adam Hepburn, 1st of Humbie, was served heir to his father Adam Hepburn, brother german to Patrick Hepburn of Kirklandhills, in an annualrent of 100 merks to be uplifted from the lands Overhartside, in the bailiewick of Lauderdale, on 14 March 1623.[1] He was a servant to Thomas Hamilton, Earl of Haddington, and was appointed a Clerk of Taxation, and a Senator of the College of Justice on 15 November 1641. He had a charter under the Great Seal confirming to him the lands of Newmilns dated 1 December 1634[2] and acquired those of Humbie and others, in the constabulary of Haddington, from James Lawson of Humbie by charter dated 3 December 1635.[3] He m. at Edinburgh, on 30 December 1629, to Agnes, daughter of George Foulis, 1st of Ravelston,[4] and d. in June 1656[5] having had issue;

  1. Thomas Hepburn, 2nd of Humbie, bap. at Edinburgh, on 14 November 1631 and succeeded his father in 1656. He m. on 9 December 1657, to Elizabeth, daughter of Archibald Johnston, 1st of Warriston, (c/m 8 November 1657.[6] She survived him and m. secondly, at the Abbey Church of Holyrood on 28 February 1668, to William Drummond, 1st Viscount Strathallan,[7]and had issue. She d. in 1679), and d. in December 1658.[8] He was father of an only child;

1a} Helen Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 7 November 1658 and was served heir of line of her father in the lands of Preston and Prestonpans, and to her grandfather, Sir Adam Hepburn, in certain parts of the barony of Keith-Marischal on 25 January 1659.[9] She m. firstly, to Walter Scott, Earl of Tarras, (c/m 31 December 1677.[10] He d. on 9 April 1693), and had issue; and surviving that husband, she m. secondly, as a second wife, to Sir William Lockhart, 1st Baronet, of Carstairs.[11]

  1. George Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 1 August 1633 and d. young.
  2. James Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 1 August 1633 and d. young.
  3. Adam Hepburn of Trabroun & 3rd of Humbie, bap. at Edinburgh, on 20 February 1639 and to whom his father assigned the lands of Trabroun on 2 August 1642.[12] He succeeded his brother Thomas in the lands of Humbie, to whom he was served heir general on 21 June 1661,[13] and had a charter under the Great Seal for those lands on 19 January 1666.[14] He m. Janet, daughter of William Hay in Aberlady, and d. by April of 1687 having had issue,

4a} Agnes Hepburn, dsp before 31 March 1687, when her sister, Janet, was served heir to her.[15]

4a} Janet Hepburn, was served heir to her sister, Agnes, on 31 March 1687 and m. in April 1684, to Patrick Murray of Livingston.[16] They had issue.

  1. David Hepburn of Rollandston & 4th of Humbie, (see below).
  2. Robert Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 5 September 1643.
  3. Janet Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 20 October 1630. She m. firstly, on 13 April 1648, to John Cockburn of Ormiston,[17]and had issue ; and secondly, to Sir James Dundas, 2nd of Arniston, (he was widow of Marion, daughter of Robert, Lord Boyd, whom he had m. in 1641. He survived Janet and m. thirdly, Helen, daughter of Sir James Skene of Curriehill, and relict of Sir Charles Erskine of Alva).
  4. Agnes Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 11 December 1634 and m. on Thursday 27 July 1654, to Archibald Douglas of Whittingham.[18] They had issue.
  5. Margaret Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 27 December 1635.
  6. Christian Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 27 December 1636.
  7. Catherine Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 21 Janaury 1638.
  8. Isobel Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 21 October 1641 and m. firstly, on 30 April 1656, to Sir James Durham of Lufness,[19]by whom she had issue; and surviving him, she m. secondly at Edinburgh, on 28 April 1673, to Robert Dalmahoy.[20]
  9. Marie Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 13 May 1649.

David Hepburn of Rollandston & 4th of Humbie, succeeded his brother Adam and was served heir to him in the barony of Humbie on 4 April 1687.[21] He m. on 24 June 1669, to Helen, daughter of John Sinclair of Herdmanston,[22] and was father of :

  1. Adam Hepburn, younger of Humbie, became an Advocate and m. Margaret, daughter of Sir James Dalrymple of Borthwick. He d. vita patris in September of 1702 and was father of :

1a} Katherine Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 13 January 1702 and d. unmarried, at Edinburgh, on 25 November 1757.[23]

  1. John Hepburn of Humbie, (see below).
  2. Henry Hepburn, became a Cherurgeon Apothecary in Edinburgh and was admitted to Burgess there in right of his father on 23 July 1701.[24] He m. at Edinburgh, on 2 February 1704, to Anna, sister of Sir Robert Dickson of Inveresk,[25] and was father of :

3a} David Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 29 August 1713.

3a} Helen Hepburn, b. at Edinburgh, on 17 May 1705.

3a} Mary Hepburn, b. at Edinburgh, on 14 September 1706.

3a} Katherine Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 15 June 1709.

  1. Elizabeth Hepburn, m. at Edinburgh, on 19 April 1702, to William Cockburn of that Ilk.[26]
  2. Agnes Hepburn, bap. at Humbie, on 4 April 1689.
  3. Janet Hepburn, m. at Edinburgh, on 5 April 1715, to John Ferguson, Merchant in Edinburgh.[27]

John Hepburn of Humbie, was apprenticed to Colin Lauder, Merchant in Edinburgh, on 26 March 1690[28] and was admitted to Burgess of Edinburgh in right of his father on 15 December 1695.[29] He succeeded to the lands of Humbie on the death, in 1702, of his elder brother Adam, and was served heir to him on 6 November 1702.[30]

He m. at Edinburgh, on 28 January 1700, to Elizabeth, daughter of James Cockburn, Goldsmith,[31] and d. at Humbie, on 18 May 1743.[32] He was father of,

  1. James Hepburn of Humbie, (see below).
  2. John Hepburn, bap. at Humbie, on 18 August 1710.
  3. Elizabeth Hepburn, bap. at Edinburgh, on 23 April 1702.
  4. Christian Hepburn, bap. at Humbie, on 28 July 1709.

James Hepburn of Humbie, bap. at Humbie, on 28 June 1708 and succeeding his father, he was served heir to him in the lands of Humbie, Keith Marschall and others, on 1 December 1743.[33] He m. on 20 February 1748, to Mary, daughter of George Houston, Merchant,[34] and d. at Humbie, on 29 October 1760[35] having had issue,

  1. John Hepburn, b. on 20 September 1749 and dsp before August of 1781.
  2. James Hepburn of Humbie, (see below).
  3. George Hepburn, b. on 4 January 1756, and entered the Royal Navy. He had dsp by December 1797.
  4. Adam Hepburn, b. on 21 October 1758 and d. at Haddington, in October of 1771.[36]
  5. Agnes Hepburn, b. on 7 July 1752.

James Hepburn of Humbie, b. on 29 July 1754, succeeded his father and was served heir to him in the lands of Humbie, Over Keith and others, on 23 August 1781.[37] He dsp at Humbie, on 2 December 1820, being then described as “the last male representative of this ancient family.”[38]
