Sir William de Durham of Grange, who, for his good services, had a charter for the lands of Grange of Monifeith with the mill thereof from King Robert I. dated 10 May 1321.[1] From him descended :

Michael de Durham of the Grange, was heir male ans successor to the lands of Grange of Monifeith for which he had Sasine in 1437.[2] He was a member of an inquest to the determine the extent and ownership of the lands of Ochterlony and Craichie on 6 February 1457,[3] and was named in a agreement between David, Earl of Crawford, and John de Auchinleck of that Ilk dated 16 March 1466.[4] He d. by 20 September 1486 and was father of :

Thomas de Durham of Grange, had succeeded to the lands of Grange by 20 September 1486 when he is named in a charter by David, Abbot of Abroath, granting an annualrent to Mr. Thomas de Durham [Durram] which had previously been uplifted from the vicarge lands of Monifeith,[5] and was a member of the inquest at the retour of Sir James Ogilvy of Airlie, as heir to his father Sir John Ogilvy, in the barony of Lintrathen, on 31 July 1489.[6] He was a member of an inquest to determine the Abbey of Arborath’s possession of the lands of Balnamoonsmyre on 3 October 1495,[7] and appears to have d. in 1497 when his son, James, was entered in the lands of Grange. He was certainly dead by 26 January 1503, and was father of :

James de Durham of Grange, had Sasine for the lands of Grange of Monifeith in 1497,[8] and had succeeded his father by 26 January 1503 when he raised an action against Sir Alexander Guthrie of that Ilk, who protested his right as heir to his deceased father, Thomas Durham of Grange, to the lands of Easterton of Guthrie.[9] He was a member of the inquest at the retour of Andrew Craig, as heir to Walter Craig of Bawnely, his father, in the lands of Baldowe on 20 April 1504[10] and d. in 1510/11. He was father of :

Alexander Durham of Grange, who was under age at his father’s death with his ward being gifted by the King to John Erskine of Dun on 4 November 1512.[11] He had Sasine for the lands of Grange on 6 August 1515, which are then said to have been in nonentry for the space of five years.[12] He m. Janet, daughter of John Erskine of Dun, and was father of :

  1. William Durham of Grange, who, as heir to his father, had a gift on 9 December 1531, of the non-entries of the lands which belonged to the deceased John Arbuthnott of Broughty until the entry of the heir.[13] He succeeded to the lands of Grange and m. Janet, daughter of Alexander Inglis of Tarvit, (she d. in July of 1580[14]), with whom he had a charter for the third-part of the lands of Laws and Baldovy from Egedia Strang of Petcorthy on 5 December 1550. He dsp in August of 1574,[15] and was succeeded by his brother Robert.
  2. Robert Durham of Grange, (see below).
  3. John Durham, was a Burgess of Dundee and d. before 4 January 1539-40. He was founder of the Pitkerrow, Largo and Boghead stirpes, (see those titles).
  4. James Durham, who is said to be founder of the Durhams of Duntarvie, (see Durham of Duntarvie).
  5. Eupham Durham, m. John Strachan of Claypotts, and d. on 3 January 1580.[16]

Robert Durham of Grange, succeeded his elder brother William and to whom he was served heir in the lands of Grange on 10 October 1574,[17] with Sasine being on 28 October following.[18] He m. Matilda, daughter or sister to Alexander Baldovie of that Ilk, (she survived him and d. on 30 September 1598[19]), and d. on 31 July 1588[20] having had issue,

  1. William Durham of Grange, (see below).
  2. Alexander Durham, m. Elspeth, daughter of John Nevay of that Ilk and in consideration of which the remainder of the outstanding tocher due was listed among her mother’s debts in 1587.

William Durham of Grange, is named in his father’s Testament in 1588 and succeeded him in the lands of Grange in 1588, for which he had Sasine on 15 October 1580.[21] He m. Jean, daughter of Robert Leslie, 1st of Findressie, (she survived him and d. on 13 March 1619[22]), and d. on 21 January 1606.[23] He was father of

William Durham of Grange, to whom his father conveyed the fee of the lands of Grange on 1 March 1591.[24] He succeeded on his father’s death in 1606 and was served heir to him in the lands of Fallow and Inverkeilour on 27 January 1610.[25] He m. Jean, daughter of William Ochterlony of that Ilk, (c/m 15 June 1595[26]), and was father of :

  1. William Durham of Grange, (see below).
  2. James Durham of Ardownie, acquired the lands of Ardownie, in the parish of Monifeith, from Archibald Murray of Ardownie and for which he had a charter under the Great Seal dated 18 July 1642.[27] He m. by then to Margaret Wood, and had issue, (see Durham of Ardownie).
  3. Mr. Patrick Durham, was educated at St. Andrews University from where he graduated Master of Arts in 1609, and was admitted Minister at Monifeith on 1 October 1616. He m. in 1614, to Janet, daughter of Mr. Andrew Clayhills, Minister of Monifeith, and d. on 24 August 1624[28] having had issue,

  1. Elizabeth Durham, m. firstly, to John Wood of Balbegno,[29] and had no apparent issue; and secondly, to John Barclay of Johnston.

William Durham of Grange, succeeded his father and m. Margaret, only daughter of John Erskine of Dun, by his wife Magdalen Haliburton, (c/m 28 & 30 October 1622[30]). He was father of :

  1. William Durham of Grange, (see below).
  2. Magdalen Durham, m. on 20 October 1650, to Sir David Livingston of Whytefield.[31]
  3. Eupham Durham, m. firstly, on 23 May 1663, to William Graham, fiar of Duntrune, by whom she had no issue ; and secondly, by 1671, to John Ogilvy of Lawton,[32] by whom she had issue.
  4. Marion Durham, m. on 6 August 1664, to William Tarbet, Merchant in Dundee,[33] and dying without issue, her nephew, Captain William Durham, was served heir general to her on 21 March 1702.[34]
  5. Grisel Durham, m. on 15 September 1674, to Henry Thornton, younger of Tulliquandland.[35]

William Durham of Grange, succeeded his father and was served heir to him in the lands of Grange on 4 March 1676,[36]which he afterwards sold to Robert Martin, in 1702. He m. Isobel, daughter of James Durham of Pitkerro,[37] and was father of :

William Durham, served as Captain in H.M. Foot Guards, and was served heir general to his aunt Marion Durham on 21 March 1702.[38] He d. “abroad” before 3 August 1711, when his Testament was confirmed.[39]
