Sir Walter de Barclay of Crawford, is said by both George Crauford and then James Paterson to have been the founder of this branch and to have acquired half of the lands of Crawfordjohn upon marriage to Margaret, daughter of Sir Crauford of Craufordjohn, but there is no evidence for that.
Hugh Barclay of Crawfordjohn, is the next for whom there is evidence and who floushed about 1357.
Sir Hugh de Barclay of Kilbirnie, is the next for whom there is evidence and was alive in May 1430 when he made provisions to two of his younger sons. He was dead by October 1456 and was father of
- John Barclay of Kilbirnie, (see below).
- Archibald Barclay, was provided by his father to half of the lands of Ladyland and which were confirmed to him by charter under the Great Seal on 25 May 1430, with remainder to his brother David.[1] Note: He is said by Crauford and Paterson to have been ancestor of the Barclays of Ladylands but the latter confesses “It is out of our power, however, to trace the descent of the family in a connected manner,” then picks up at David Barclay of Ladyland who was living in 1564. Both of those historians were clearly unaware of the two charters to Archibald and his brother David for half of Ladyland and on account of that, it is uncertain from which of the two that stirpes descended.
- David Barclay, was also provided by his father to the second half of the lands of Ladyland which were confirmed to him by charter under the Great Seal on 25 May 1430.[2]
John Barclay of Kilbirnie, had succeeded by 22 October 1456, when he was a member of the inquest at the service of John Somerville, as heir to his father, William, Lord Somerville, in the fourth part of the barony of Stenhouse.[3] He was included in an action raised by John Stewart of Buchan regarding rights to the mails of the lands of Milgerholm on 16 May 1474[4] and died about 1480. He was father of,
Marjory Barclay of Kilbirnie, succeeded her father and was infeft in the lands of Kilbirnie and half of those of Crawfordjohn as heir to him on Sasine dated 11 August 1481.[5] She married Malcolm Crawford of Easter Greenock and had issue, (see Crawford of Kilbirnie).
