MacKinnon of Ghamboil

I am keen to hear from anyone who is either descended of this family or else has further information particularly in relation to those members living in the 19th and 20th centuries.

 

Charles Mackinnon, the found of this stirpes, was brother of Sir Lachlan Mackinnon of Strathordale, and of whom little is known other than that he was father of,

Lachlan ruaidh Mackinnon, is styled Lachlan McCharles VcKynnon in Torrell and one of the administrators of the estate of John Mackinnon of Strathordale in 1634[1]. He is referred to as “filius patrui” (uncle’s son), to John Mackinnon of Strathordale when adjudged to be nearest agnate to that person and appointed his curator on 4 October 1636[2] and was father of,

  1. Lachlan oig Mackinnon of Ghamboil, (see below).
  2. Charles MacKinnon, the founder of the Keannauchdarach stirpes, is generally accepted to have been a younger son of Lachlan ruaidh. He had issue.

Lachlan oig Mackinnon of Ghamboil, had the wadset of the lands of Ghamboil from Lachlan Mackinnon of Strathordale on 20 July 1675 and had married by then, to Annabella,[3] daughter of Roderick MacKenzie of Applecross. He had issue,

  1. John Mackinnon of Ghamboil, (see below).
  2. Lachlan MacKinnon of Corriechattan, acquired those lands and had issue, (see MacKinnon of Corriechattan).

John Mackinnon of Ghamboil, died before September 1723 having had issue;

William Mackinnon of Ghamboil, succeeded and was served heir general to his grandfather, Lachlan Mackinnon of Ghamboil, on 19 September 1723.[4] He was father of,

John Mackinnon of Ghamboil, succeeded and had service as heir general to his great-grandfather, Lachlan Mackinnon of Ghamboil, on 6 August 1724,[5] then infeft in the lands of Ghamboil also as heir to him by Sasine dated 15 September following.[6] He was father of

Roderick Mackinnon of Ghamboil, succeeded his father but was the last to retain possession of rights to Ghamboil. He married Flora, daughter of Mr. Donald Mackinnon, Minister of Strath, and was father of,

  1. Lachlan Mackinnon, of whom nothing is known.
  2. John Mackinnon, (see below).
  3. Neil Mackinnon, of whom little is known.
  4. Charles Mackinnon, was born in 1791 and was better known as “Tearlach MacRhuaridh.” He married Mary, sister of Major MacCrimmon, Glenelg, and was father of,

4a} Farquhar Mackinnon, was a teacher at North Uist before taking up the position of tutor to the children of Mr. Atwood at Fronfraith, near Aberystwyth, in Wales, in 1851. He died there on 7 October 1852, in his 25th year.[7]

4a} Duncan Mackinnon, born in 1831 and is said to have gone into the army and settled at Capetown, South Africa.

4a} John Mackinnon, born in 1831 and died at Hartlepool.

4a} Donald Mackinnon, born in 1839 was educated at John Watson’s Hospital, Edinburgh.

4a} Anne MacKinnon, born in 1821.

John Mackinnon, was born at Strath in 1774/75. He enlisted in the Royal Inverness Fencibles on 12 January 1795, and served with them until 12 July 1802. He afterwards joined the 97th Regiment of Foot on 10 September 1806 and remained with them until pensioned on 10 December 1818.[8] He afterwards joined the Glasgow Police. He married at Barony, Glasgow, on 11 June 1819, to Margaret Morrison[9] and died at Edinburgh, on 21 October 1856[10] having had issue;

Roderick Mackinnon, the only apparent child, was born at Glasgow, on 21 March 1821, and became a confectioner and pastry cook in Edinburgh, then a Flour Merchant in England. He married at Edinburgh, on 30 July 1847, to Henrietta, daughter of Adam Laing, Jeweller,[11] and was living with his son Charles and his wife at Finsbury Park, Hornsey, in 1911 and died the following year. He was father of,

  1. John Mackinnon, bap. at St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh, on 11 January 1850 and was buried there on 27 July 1851.[12]
  2. James Mackinnon, bap. at St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh, on 2 August 1853 and was a commercial clerk in London in 1881. He married a woman named Alice, and died s.p. at Islington, London, in 1901.
  3. Charles Corry Mackinnon, born at Edinburgh on 30 July 1859, and became a Commercial Traveller in the music trade. He married in 1906, to Bessie Matheson.
  4. Roderick Henry Mackinnon, born at Edinburgh on 5 August 1861, and was a commercial clerk and agent. He married, firstly, on 5 June 1886, to Harriett, youngest daughter of Joseph Foster, of Bradford,[13] and secondly, in 1893, to Alice Cox, (she died on 24 December 1903[14]).
  5. Ann Mackinnon, bap. at St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh, on 31 May 1848 and died young.
  6. Margaret Corry Mackinnon, bap. at St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh, on 11 December 1851 and married on 15 March 1879, to William Riddell MacKinnon, of the Kyle branch.
