STEWART

of KILCHATTAN

 

 

Ninian Stewart of Kildavnan and Kilchattan, was a younger son of Stewart of Bute and married Elizabeth Lindsay. He died before April 1573 and had issue:

 

  1. Robert Stewart of Kilchattan, (see below).
  2. Alexander Stewart of Kelspokis, was provided by his father to the fee of the lands of North Ballachmartin in a charter under the Great Seal to them for those lands dated 18 September 1549.[1] He died before July 1595 and was father of,

2a} James Stewart of Kelspokis, who, as heir to his late father, had a confirmation under the Great Seal for the lands of North Ballochmartin on 20 July 1595.[2] He was father of,

2b} Alexander Stewart of Kelspokis, succeeded and had special service as heir to his grandfather, Alexander Stewart, in the lands of Kelspokis on 17 December 1622.[3] He also had service as heir to his father in those of North Ballochmartin on 21 July 1625.[4]

  1. Ninian Stewart, who, on 20 June 1578, received a gift under the Privy Seal for those mails, teinds, etc., of Paisley Abbey which had been omitted from the rental of 1561 and to endure at the king’s will.[5]
  2. John Stewart, 1st of Ascog, who received, on 1 April 1568, the gift of the ward of the lands of Over and Nether Ascog until the entry of the heir of the late Archibald og MacLachlan, and in which he is styled son of Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan.[6]He had issue, (see Red Book of Scotland Volume 16, Stewart of Ascog).
  3. Isabella Stewart, married Hugh Barclay of Ladyland (marriage contract 20 April 1573[7]).

 

Robert Stewart of Kilchattan, in favour of whom his father purchased the lands of Kilchattan more and beg from John Stewart of Kilchattan and for which they had a charter dated 18 May 1548.[8] He married Margaret Brisbane (to whom a liferent was reserved in May 1588) and was father of,

 

Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan, married Egedia Stewart and with whom, as his future wife, he had a conjunct charter from his father for the lands of Meikle Kilchattan which was confirmed under the Great Seal on 13 May 1588.[9] He died by 9 March 1615 and was father of,

 

  1. Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan, (see below).
  2. John Stewart of Ballinstrade, acquired those lands in Antrim and was father of;

2a} Mr James Stewart, was served heir male to his uncle (patrui), Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan, in the lands of Dunallid-McGilmichael on 20 May 1664,[10] then to Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan (filius patrui), in those of Meikle and Little Kilchattan and others, on the same day. He had issue.

  1. Archibald Stewart, is styled brother to Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan when witness with him to a Sasine in favour of Archibald Campbell of Otter as heir to his late father, Colin Campbell of Otter, in the lands of Ewenchane of 29 February 1620.[11]

 

Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan, succeeded his father about 1615 and married Janet, daughter of John Stewart of Rosland (marriage contract 19 July and 7 August 1610[12]). He was father of,

 

Ninian Stewart, younger of Kilchattan, married Catherine, daughter of Mr. William Adamson of Craigcruik (marriage contract at Edinburgh, on 23 November 1641[13]) and was father of;

 

Grisel Stewart, became heir of line to her father on his death. She is so-styled in an Adjudication in favour of Alexander Wilson, writer in Edinburgh, dated 12 December 1674, against her and her husband, John Stewart, as well as Mr. James Stewart, heir of tailize to her late father, for payment of a Bond granted to her late father.[14] She married the said John Stewart of Ardinho and had issue which succeeded to Kilchattan.
