STRACHAN
of CLAYPOTTS
- John Strachan, 1st of Claypotts, (see below).
- Mr. Gilbert Strachan, was appointed an apostolic protonotary and a canon of Aberdeen and died s.p. before 20 December 1538 when his nephew, Mr. James Strachan, was acting as his executor.[1]
John Strachan, 1st of Claypotts, is first named in a precept for a remission in his and five other’s favour that passed the Privy Seal on 25 February 1510-11, for their having stolen seven horse and other items from the lands of Over Kincairns, belonging to the Chancellor of Dunkeld.[2] He was father of :
- John Strachan of Claypotts, (see below).
- Mr. James Strachan, was appointed a canon of Aberdeen, and was executor to his uncle, Mr. Gilbert Strachan, Apostolic Protonotary and canon of Aberdeen, in whose name he granted an annualrent to the parish church of Creich for the welfare of the souls of various persons, on 20 December 1538.[3] He and his nephew, Gilbert Strachan, had a charter from Thomas Maule of Panmure for the half-part of the lands lands of Skryne dated 26 June 1556.[4]
John Strachan of Claypotts, succeeded to the lands of Claypotts. He married Eupham, sister of Robert Durham of Grange, (she died on 3 January 1580[5]) and died in 1593 having had issue;

- James Strachan, is included with his elder brother Gilbert in a Bond by them to John Hamilton, commendator of Arbroath, dated 8 January 1577/78.[6]
Gilbert Strachan of Claypotts, is styled “nepoti ex fratre” to Mr. James Strachan, canon of Aberdeen, when they had a charter from Thomas Maule of Panmure for the half lands of Skryne on 26 June 1556,[7] and is styled son and heir to John Strachan of Claypotts when witness to a charter by Mr. James Strachan, canon of Aberdeen, granting various lands, crofts and gardens in the parish of Balhelvie to Mr. Thomas Gardyne and Elizabeth Stewart, his wife, dated 27 February 1570.[8] He married Elizabeth, daughter of Alexander Maxwell of Tealing, (marriage contract 7 & 18 September 1584[9]) and died on 5 Jauary 1593/94.[10] He had issue,

- Isobel Strachan, is named with her brother David in their father’s Testament in 1594.
John Strachan and Claypotts, succeeded his father and was served heir to him in the middle-part of the lands of Skryne on 15 December 1599.[11] He married Agnes Erskine, (she was widow of Alexander Halkertoun) and with her consent and that of his mother, Elizabeth Maxwell, he disponed his lands of Claypotts to William Graham of Baldowrie by charter dated 30 and 31 May 1601.[12]
