Several Logan families all designated “portioner of Restalrig,” emerge into extant 16th century historical records but although the general understanding is that they descend in some way from Logan of Restalrig, there is no evidence for that. The example below is one of several that will be posted over the coming weeks to here and also to the “Red Book of Scotland” Substack account at https://redbookofscotland.substack.com/
James Logan in Restalrig, married Catherine Skirling with whom he granted an Obligation to Barbara and Margaret Syme, daughters of the late James Syme, burgess of Edinburgh, on 22 May 1561.[1] He was father of,
- Robert Logan, portioner of Restalrig, (see below).
- Elspeth Logan,
- Katherine Logan,
- Rachael Logan, all three of which sisters were beneficiaries of their brother Robert’s Will in 1579, by which they each received £300 Scots.
Robert Logan, portioner of Restalrig, married Elizabeth Logan with whom he was infeft by Robert Logan of Restalrig, in four oxgates of lands in Restalrig upon precept dated 31 July 1576, and in which he is styled son and heir of James Logan in Restalrig.[2] He died on 14 February 1578-79, having made out his Will in his dwelling house in Restalrig on the previous 20 January.[3] On 20 August 1580, she, as his relict, and their son James received a charter from John Logan of Coitfield for the lands of Piershill, in the barony of Restalrig.[4] He had issue,
- Robert Logan, (see below).
- James Logan,
- Helen Logan,
Robert Logan, is named with his two siblings in their father’s Testament in 1579. He was father of,
Robert Logan, who is styled son and heir to the late Robert Logan “quha was sone & air to ye said umqull James Logan, portioner of Restalrig” in a redemption on 12 June 1621, of an original contract by his great-grandfather, James Logan, dated 22 May 1561.[5]
