Note: Writing in 1739, Rev. Duncan Stewart asserts that John Stewart, second son of Andrew Stewart, 1st of Gartnaferan, was “predecessor to the Stewarts of Blairgarry.” It is also worth noting that Patrick Stewart, brother to that Andrew Stewart, 1st of Gartnaferan, acquired the lands of Ardkeanknockane in 1503 and was father of Robert Stewart of Blairgarry, who disponed those lands to Thomas Graham of Boquhapple in April 1558. Even were Rev. Duncan Stewart marginally incorrect in his statement, and even though there may have been two genealogically separate Stewart of Blairgarry families, it is evident that in any event, descent of both was of the body of James Stewart, 1st of Balindoran.
Andrew Stewart of Blairgarry, had Sasine for the lands of Blairgarry on 20 December 1656, as heir to his father, James Stewart, and to his late grandfather, Andrew Stewart of Blairgarry (See NRS RS51/4/131r], and to which Andrew Stewart in Chapel of Lanrick was bailie.
Andrew Stewart of Blairgarry, who, according to the tenor of his grandson’s Sasine, acquired the lands of Blairgarry from James Stewart, Lord Doune. He was dead by April 1675 having had issue:
James Stewart of Blairgarry, was also referred to as “indweller in Glenfinglass.” He died before April 1675 and had issue:
Andrew Stewart of Blairgarry, succeeded his grandfather and namesake in the lands of Blairgarry and in which he was infeft by Sasines dated 5 April 1675 (see NRS RS3/31/318-320).
To be continued.
